Plumbing Checks Before You Go on Holiday

1. Turn off your mains water supply
- If you have a smart Shut-off Valve like Leak Watch, turn off the water using the app.
- Or,
- Find the stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink or in the hot press and turn it clockwise to turn off the water.
This stops fresh water from feeding a leak.
2. Check under sinks and appliances
- Look for signs of damp, rust, or water stains.
- Check pipe joints under kitchen and bathroom sinks.
- Move washing machines and dishwashers slightly to check for pooled water.
3. Inspect your attic water tank
- If you have one, make sure it’s in good condition.
- Look for any signs of overflow or leaks.
- Fit a drip tray if there isn’t one already installed.
4. Test your toilet cisterns
- Flush each toilet and listen. If you hear running water after a few minutes, it could be leaking.
- Lift the lid and check the internal parts for wear or sticking.
5. Check exposed pipes for wear
- Look at pipes in the hot press, utility room, and attic.
- Any green, white, or crusty build-up could mean corrosion.
6. Clear your gutters and downpipes
- Blocked gutters can lead to water getting into walls or under the roof.
- Remove leaves and check for blockages.
7. Install smart leak detection
- Fit leak sensors under sinks, near toilets, under appliances and in the attic.
- A smart shut-off valve will stop a leak even when you’re not at home.
Final tip: tell someone you’re away
- Ask a neighbour or family member to check in on the house.
- If you have a leak detection system, share the alert notifications with them.
